Reading
This past week we reviewed assessments the children had taken on the computer for reading. We found that a large portion of our second graders were struggling with reading fluency and phonics. In order to meet these needs we will be using our Monday reading time to review phonics skills and reading fluency. We will be working with LONG E words using EE and EA for our phonics skills. We will practice these skills with the phonics story, Green Leaf News Club. For our comprehension skill, we will be working on describing the SETTING and USING SCHEMA (what we already know to hlep us understand what we're reading) in our stories. We will practice this skill with our main story for the week, Three Little Bikers.

Social Studies/Science/Health
We are continuing and finishing our plant study this week! We will continue to use our observation books to keep track of our growing plant sas we try to identify them. We will continue learning about the parts of the plants, what plants need to live, the different types of plants and the life cycle of plants. We hope to answer some of the questions we came up with and wrote onto our KWL chart. K stands for what I Know about plants, W stands for What I want to know (these were the kids' questions) and L stands for what I Learned (we fill out this part at the end of the unit).
**We will do the first unit of social studies and then do a unit of science and then a unit of health. This rotation will carry on through the year.

Writing
Due to the lengthy nature of the editing process in our writing, we were not able to start our new writing unit last week. This week, we will begin our new unit, Personal Narrative Writing. We will read a sweet story to model a personal narrative story. We will discuss what personal narrative stories include, and we will fill out a heart map sheet that we use to brainstorm and write about the things that are "close to our heart." This last activity will help us to think of people and experiences that we love, which will help us to come up with ideas to write our personal narrative story about. We plan to begin writing our own Personal Narrative stories at the end of the week.
